This week has taken us from high places to pondering fond, old spaces; from the skies above the Creston Valley to the Beaver Valley Nursery School.

Wednesday was a beautiful day for Eugene and me to take a helicopter ride to inspect a few thousand acres in the Creston area. I did have to play tourist though and got a couple of shots of Duck Lake and the south end of Kootenay Lake and some of the lowlands of the Creston Valley. There was some smoke in the air, but it still took my breath away.

Afterwards we stopped for lunch at this wonderful Italian Restaurant in Creston called Aldo & Co Restaurante Italiano. The food was authentically delicious and the service exceptional. Definitely worth the trip and one of my favorite places; the address is 1821 Canyon Street.

On the way home I stopped by the Beaver Valley Nursery School to take a picture for the section of our website, Kootenay Boundary Architecture. http://www.keystoneappraisals.ca/KootenayBoundaryArchitecture

This led to a little research. This welcoming, little one-room school was built by volunteer labour in 1939. The doors opened to received grades 1 to 8 in 1940. Many of the students still reside in the area. It closed in 1971 and for the last 20 or so years has been the home of the non-profit Beaver Valley Nursery School with approximately 65-75 pre-schoolers attending every week.

My husband’s cousin, June Anderson, started school there in 1943. Eight grades in one room! My husband, Rob, went to Sunday School there and attended grades 1 and 2 in 1960 and 1961. Rob’s brother, Wayne Ironmonger, also started school there in 1954.

There have been recent upgrades; the foundation has been re-leveled, painting, new windows and floors. There is still some work required and they are looking for donations. If you are interested, please visit: www.beavervalleynurseryschool.com or contact; Rebecca Weatherford, President , 367-7507.
